History

Salisbury, the county seat of Rowan County, is the oldest city in the western half of North Carolina. History buffs are drawn to Salisbury for its preservation of homes and the downtown area. The city has 10 National Registered historic districts with many historic homes and commercial buildings dating from the 19th century and early 20th century of which are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From the time of frontiersman Daniel Boone and President Andrew Jackson with their ties to Rowan, through the Civil War's Confederate Prison located here and General Stoneman's Raid, into the golden age of rail transportation with Norfolk-Southern's Spencer Yards (now the NC Transportation Museum), Rowan County remains proud of and committed to its heritage.
